    Have you heard rumors of a lemonade diet? Or maybe you've heard you can actually lose weight with lemonade? Hard as it might be for some to believe, it's actually true. And there are a couple of ways it can be done...

    First let's look at what's known as the "Lemonade Diet". This is actually just another type of juice fast diet. In other words, all you do is drink lemonade and water for several days. It's not quite that simple but that is the gist of things.

    Lemons are extremely high in vitamins and nutrients, plus they help clean out your colon. So here's the details of how this diet works:

    1. Create real lemonade from the juice of lemons. If you try using bottled lemon juice - or worse: Instant powdered lemonade drink, you will not see any progress. The powdered stuff is usually just lemon flavored sugar water, and the bottled juice often has preservatives and other misc stuff included that's not great for your body.

    So squeeze some real lemons, or use a juice machine. Either way, make sure you're using fresh lemon juice.

    2. Mix in organic maple syrup to taste. This is used for sweetener, but it also provides you with additional vitamins and minerals to help keep you healthy during your juice fast. It also helps keep your blood sugar from dropping too low.

    Since this is a form of sugar though, it should be used cautiously - especially by diabetics. Too much of any kind of sugar will prevent you from losing weight.

    3. Mix in water to taste. Straight lemon juice by itself is way too tart for most of us, no matter how much syrup might be mixed in. It's usually a good idea to use filtered or spring water here, to be sure you're not feeding your body all the junk and pollutants that come from our taps.

    Create a new batch of this juice each day. Usually one gallon mixed at the beginning of the day is good, then you simply drink the juice all day long. You can have as many glasses of pure water as you'd like too.

    This diet has been maintained by some for multiple months with great success. A juice fast of any kind can be dangerous though, and I don't recommend doing one for longer than one or two weeks - if you must.

    A better, and safer way to use Lemonade in your weight loss efforts, is to simply include it with your regular healthy meals. Lemonade - in fact any citrus - will help slow the digestion of carbs in your system. So having lemonade with your meal will effectively help reduce how fast your body reacts to the carbs in that meal. And by reducing how fast it reacts of course, you reduce the whole cycle of insulin spikes that cause the weight gain problems to begin with.

    You still need to make healthier choices with your meals of course though. Having a tall glass of lemonade with your chocolate cake is not likely to produce the weight loss progress you'd like.

Your target should be to lose around 2 pounds per week. Use tools such as a skin fold caliper to check that you are in fact losing fat. This can be done at home, but you may get more accurate results at a health club.

    Step 3. Throw Out The Shakes, Meal Replacements And Starvation Tactics

    The best diet for life should include a new health style for your whole family. You can't live on meal replacements or cabbage soup. Your body and mind will never be satisfied with a shake in place of a filling, chewy, delicious, aromatic meal. Meal replacements can never be long-term solutions.     Perhaps we should stop thinking in terms of a New Year's diet altogether. If you need to drop 10 or 30 or even 100 pounds, you can do this by simply making a few sums and changing some habits. You will not even feel deprived. Did you know that you could save 22,000 calories and lose around 6 pounds of fat in a year by simply switching from whole milk to skim milk? Or that by reducing your daily mayonnaise habit by one tablespoon daily, you could make another 9 pounds of flab and fat disappear over 12 months? This without taking any other steps.

    Do some research and find other examples that can easily be incorporated into your new family healthstyle. Get the kids involved and they will soon discover that they only need to make smarter food choices. What can be easier than this? You can even give a prize to the family member who comes up with the most useful New Year diet suggestion.

    Step 5. Make Family Activity A Fun Part Of Every Day

    If you want to change the size of your butt, you have to drop the 'but' and start exercising. There simply is no other choice - you move, and the fat will start to move. Excuses and inactivity won't get you into that skin-tight pair of jeans. Don't have the cash for a gym membership? No problem. There are many affordable fitness equipment tools for home use. Put on some of the best workout music, and get an exercise ball workout going. Or set the kid in you free with an urban rebounder exercise routine.

    Sinusitis is highly overrated.

    Picture this scenario. You're the doctor. Your patient has waited an hour to see you. He complains of congestion, headache, sinus pressure, and post-nasal drainage. Yes, the drainage is yellow. No, he hasn't missed work. He winces when you tap his sinuses. He wants you to know how miserable he is. You gotta do something, Doc.

    Is it sinusitis or is it a cold?

    Sinusitis means inflammation of the lining of the sinus cavities. It does not always mean infection. From what I've seen in primary care medicine, doctors often - quite often - use the diagnosis "sinusitis" as an excuse to give antibiotics. It's what our patients want after all, at least most of them. Whether antibiotics work or not, patients believe in them.

    But colds are much more common than sinus infections, and allergies can cause similar symptoms.

    It's just a cold, you tell the patient. No antibiotics are indicated.

    Your patient glares at you. He knows what he needs. The next day he calls your partner and demands an antibiotic - and gets it. No sense getting sued over amoxicillin.

    Here's the point. Unless the situation is bad enough to make you feverish, or to make you miss work, or to make you look sick enough for an x-ray, it's probably just a cold - sinus irritation caused by a virus.

    Here's 7 tips to save money on sinusitis:

    1. Ask your doctor if it's truly bacterial sinusitis. If he makes a convincing argument, then ask for a antibiotic. Rarely do you need something more expensive. The antibiotics include amoxicillin, sulfa drugs, doxycycline, erythromycin, cephalexin and ciprofloxacin. Of these, the first four are considered first-line antibiotics for respiratory infections.

    2. Otherwise, what you want/need is symptom relief. We'll start with pain - facial pain, head pain, or even sometimes tooth pain. You'd be surprised how often a patient hasn't considered standard pain relievers such as Tylenol®, aspirin, Advil® or Motrin® (ibuprofen), or Aleve® - they all provide effective relief for most patients - for under .

    3. Mucus. Snot. Phlegm. Take your pick. If you have excess mucus you'll either want to dry it up or make it run thinner, like maple syrup in the spring (see #5). Tasty metaphor! Antihistamines such as Benadryl® (diphenhydramine) and Zyrtec® dry up mucus. This can be good or bad. For some people it provides real relief. For others, it makes them feel worse - they can't get the snot out (see #4). OTC medications are as good as prescription medications - most were prescription some time ago anyway - and cost under . And by the way, whereas Claritin® (loratadine) works great for allergies, the above work better for infections.

    4. If you can't get the snot out, try nasal douching. Fancy words. If you have a clogged pipe, run water through it. Same goes for the nose. Use a penny's worth of warm salt water and run it through from one side to the other. This flushes out germs, mucus, chemicals, allergens (things you're allergic to) and sometimes paper clips.     5. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Rather than dry up the mucus, many patients feel better if the mucus is allowed to run more freely. Mucolytics - primarily guaifenesin, the active ingredient in Mucinex® and some cough medicines - make mucus more watery. Then it feels like you're swallowing saliva rather than snot, just like you're supposed to. Don't spend on a fancy product. Just get a store brand.

    6. And now my personal favorite, pseudoephedrine. In the good old days, a few years ago, you could buy pseudoephedrine over-the-counter. Now you have to ask a pharmacist for it, thanks to the meth labs. The new Sudafed PE® contains phenylephrine, not nearly as effective in my experience. Pseudoephedrine opens the nasal/sinus passages, allowing mucus and air to flow more freely. It also has a bit of a drying effect. If I could choose only one therapy, this would be it - relief for under . Even though the medication is OTC, prescription plans often cover it, even cheaper than OTC! Common side effects include insomnia and palpitations, much like excess caffeine.

    7. Ask your pharmacist for free advice. Tell your pharmacist your symptoms and she can tell you what medications will help you most. They deal with this stuff everyday - skip the doctor and save 50 bucks. Since you're seeking symptom relief, be as specific as possible. If you have multiple symptoms, a multi-relief medication may be your best bet.

    Flow of Maple Sap through assorted mainline fittings

    WWW.MAPLECHATTER.COM---Here is a video i took of sap flowing through various maple sap mainline fittings at Proctor Maple Research center in Underhill, VT. I believe on this perticular system there is approx. 300 taps in use. The clear pipe being used is Clear Tygon pipe that has a 1 1/2" OD and a 1" ID to match up with the regular 1" that is used as normal mainline.

    The Acadians centered in south Louisiana, or more commonly known as Cajuns have a term for sauted onions, celery and green pepper,...The Holy Trinity. It is the aromatic foundation of such famous Cajun dishes as gumbo, jambalaya and etouffee.

    In Italian cuisine The Holy Trinity is onions, carrots and celery sauteed in olive oil and it is the base of many soups and casseroles. This holy trinity is called a sofrito and works very well in this hearty stew to start building the layers of flavor we're looking for.

    Let's get started...

    1 tablespoon olive oil
    12 small smokey pork sausages or breakfast sausages
    2 cloves garlic minced
    1 medium onion, diced
    1 carrot, diced
    1 celery rib, diced
    1 15 oz. canned chopped Italian plum tomatoes
    1 teaspoon paprika
    2 tablespoons maple syrup
    2 sprigs thyme
    1 15 oz. can cannellini beans, drained
    toasted sourdough bread, for serving

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Heat olive oil in an oven proof Dutch oven, add sausages and cook until evenly browned, remove and set aside. To Dutch oven add onion, garlic, carrot and celery and saute for 5 minutes. Add remaining ingredients, sausages and 2 cups of water to Dutch oven. Bring to a boil and put on middle rack in preheated oven and bake for 45-60 minutes, until thickened. Ladle generous portions onto toasted sourdough slices. To finish give a quick drizzle of olive oil and a few small leaves of fresh thyme.

    There are many simple ways to combine syrup with one or more ingredients for savory foods as well as sweet. Maple syrup is no longer confined to just the desert menu, with this list and a little imagination you will WOW your guests at your next dinner party! 50 Uses encompasses suggestions for beverages, snacks and appetizers, salad dressings, toppings, breads and muffins and deserts along with a few unorthodox uses that will surprise you. Most of these tips are easy to create, but for some of the more specific suggestions there is a link for the recipes at the end of this article.

    Maple syrup is not normally used in beverages, but here are uses both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The leading favorite is 1. Maple Martini, also delicious are 2. Maple Rum Coolers, 3. Hot Buttered Maple Rum Toddy's and 4. Maple Brandy Alexander made with vanilla ice cream for a really decadent drink. Other drink favorites that contain maple syrup are 5. hot coffee latte's, 6. milkshakes 7. hot cocoa and 8. fancy holiday eggnog. In salads if you haven't tried combining maple syrup in salad dressings, 9. is a very simple summer dressing made with syrup and mayonnaise over a green apple and broccoli salad. It's easy and very impressive. For 10. a fruit salad dressing using toasted coconut, slivered almonds,rum, syrup and lime. Maple flavor goes very well with 11. Mustard and wine vinegar, olive oil and garlic for a savory salad or 12. try it with canola oil, apple cider vinegar, white wine and lemon zest. Maple syrup is a great additive for toppings on cakes, ice cream, hot cereal and grilled foods. Try it with 13. whipped cream or 14. mix with crushed raspberries for fruit syrup, 15.mix with barbecue sauce for ribs or salmon, 16. mix maple with walnuts,cinnamon and nutmeg over hot oatmeal for a very healthy breakfast, 17. mix hot maple syrup with mashed bananas and pecans over ice cream or 18. mix warm Nuttella and maple syrup for vanilla ice cream. 19. Make a glaze for cake or cheesecake with boiled condensed milk, syrup and pecans or 20. a special breakfast treat whip syrup with butter and orange zest for hot rolls and muffins, 21. mix with cream cheese and vanilla for cake frosting and for the easiest and most potent topping: 22. Mix maple syrup with a dark rum over pancakes... it's transcendent!

    To get children involved in the kitchen, introduce them to 23. maple caramel popcorn balls 24. maple candy or 25. maple walnut brittle. Also great as a snack or sprinkle 26. sweet and spicy maple glazed hazelnuts over salads. 27. Grilled maple glazed pineapple slices are heavenly;28. phyllo triangle bites stuffed with maple cream cheese, apple and walnuts is a terrific party favorite and 29. maple glazed grilled asparagus tips wrapped in bacon makes an elegant appetizer or side dish.Incredible and very easy to make is 30. maple beer batter bread; even better, make 31. beer batter bread french toast with rum laced syrup. If you enjoy making yeast breads, 32. is a coarse maple oatmeal bread, very healthy and hearty 33. Maple chocolate tea scones or 34. moist maple pear muffins with a crumbly topping for afternoon tea with the girls and another great food combination is 35. maple with sweet potato muffins or fresh pumpkin. 36. Maple pecan bread is another special use for this fragrant syrup and can also be used for 37. a really good french toast. Maple can be used in 38. any cinnamon roll or sticky buns recipe. Have you tried making 39. Maple creme brulee or 40. maple cream pie. Another easy desert to make is 41. maple walnut ice cream, 42. maple brownies, or the very popular 43. maple rum fudge.
